Homemade Guacamole

IMG_1020.jpeg

This recipe for guacamole can be made any which way you like. We are providing the recipe which we use the most, but there are endless ways to make it your own. Not in the mood for spicy? Skip the jalapenos! Couldn’t care less about tomatoes? Leave them out! The best part about making guacamole at home is that you can truly tailor it to your personal preferences, every time. And who doesn’t love a bowl of custom guacamole?

Guacamole is one of my favorite dips to make and eat all year long. I love it with tortilla chips, on nachos, in a salad, in a taco bowl, topped on quesadillas, added to a pan of enchiladas….you get the picture! Our recipe for guacamole is one that Seth has finessed over the years, which is why it’s a chunky version of the classic. We like our guacamole with lots of stuff in it!

A taco bowl is one of my favorite ways to include guacamole in dinner!

A taco bowl is one of my favorite ways to include guacamole in dinner!

However, there are times when I prefer a more pared-down bowl of guac with just a little salt, lime juice, and cilantro. It really depends on my mood and what else is being served with it. That’s what is so great about guacamole - it’s so versatile! And it’s pretty much always naturally gluten free. ;)

Our recipe for guacamole, as I’ve mentioned above, is ripe for adjustments based on personal preferences. If you’d like to include all but one ingredient, go for it. If you’d like to change the amount of onion, go ahead! We don’t make the rules! We’re just sharing an awesome recipe for really delicious guacamole. Now, go grab a bag of your favorite tortilla chips, plenty of avocados, and get to work!

And don’t forget…a bowl of chips and guacamole pairs quite well with The Weekend. :)

House (Homemade) Guacamole

Recipe by Seth Drury

Ingredients

2 ripe avocados (add another if you’d like more)

1 roma tomato, diced

1⁄2 small red onion, diced (can substitute with 1 whole shallot instead)

Juice of one half of a lime (more if needed)

A handful of chopped cilantro

1 minced serrano or jalapeno pepper (optional)

Salt to taste (a hefty pinch should be about right)

Preparation

Note: Besides the avocado, any of the ingredients can be omitted or substituted if they aren’t to your taste or preference (it’s OK to not like spicy food). However, this combination gives our favorite version of chunky guacamole. It’s “party style” for sure. Feel free to double the recipe for a great big bowl of guacamole. ;)

1. To remove the avocado pits: With a chef’s knife, cut avocados in half around the pit, twist one side off, then hit the knife into the pit and twist it out.

2. Squeeze the avocados out of their skins into a bowl as you would squeeze a lime (this does a nice job of starting the mashing process).

3. Add tomato, onion, lime juice, cilantro, pepper, and a pinch of salt to the bowl and mix together with a fork until the avocado breaks down as much as you prefer. Less mashing/mixing = chunkier guacamole.

4. Taste and then season to taste with more salt and/or lime juice as needed.

5. Serve immediately with your favorite tortilla chips or meal of choice.
