The Fall Edit: What to Wear Right Now

IMG_3927.jpeg

Fall is one of the most wonderful times of the year. The foliage is beautiful, the crisp air welcome, and my goodness it’s really the best season for getting dressed. Personally, I think this is the most fun season to put together outfits here in the northeast. You don’t have to wear socks, layering is a choice (not a requirement), and the colors are rich and vibrant.

There has also never been a better time to wear neutrals day in and day out. In fact, neutral tones make up most of my wardrobe. I’ve slid in a hot pink here and there, but I do lean toward the more laid-back colors for everyday. Navy and olive green are having a moment in my wardrobe.

So before the temps really start to drop and I have to prepare a winter coat guide, I’d love to share what I’ve been wearing most frequently in the middle of fall foliage season. These are the pieces from my closet that I’ve been reaching for, daily. For the record, my phone has equal numbers of golden leaves photos as it does screenshots of sweaters I’m adding to my cart. ;)

Tops

Dudley Stephens Fleece - If you haven’t noticed, I wear a Dudley several times each week. I bought my first one last fall and well, the collection began. These stylish fleece tops are ultra-soft, very versatile, and are the ultimate “low key chic” piece to wear when you don’t know what to wear.

When in doubt, throw on a Dudley. they go with everything! And for the record, they wash quite well (skip the dryer and hang dry). I’m partial to the Park Slope style, but I do love the Cobble Hill to wear for long walks. I’m often wearing the Somerset sweatshirt post-workout, too.

Everlane Texture Cotton Cardigan - I saw another IG style-blogger wearing this sweater and thus began my interest in Everlane clothing (she styled it so well!). I’ve been eyeing the site for a long time, but had yet to try anything. I’m hooked!

This chunky-knit cardigan has quickly become a closet staple because it looks nice for zoom meetings and is very comfy for weekend errands ( that’s life right now). I’ve also become a quick fan of their organic cotton t-shirts.

J.Crew V-neck Cardigan in Stripe - This is another fall item that I saw on numerous style-minded folk and had to give it a try myself. I like it! It’s a cropped-style that’s fairly boxy (I think?) and works best layered with a plain tee underneath. However, I’ve seen many people wearing it as a top on its own. Once again, it’s a great sweater for work meetings, but it’s a good choice for a weekend picnic. Cardigans - so versatile!

Chambray Shirt - For some reason I always think chambray shirts look chic, year-round. If you can find one that’s cut right, they can be one of the most comfy, versatile button-down shirts out there.

I have two chambray shirts in my closet and I wear the more fitted one buttoned up with black jeans (or white). For the “ex-boyfriend-style” chambray, I love wearing it open with a tank underneath and darker-wash denim. Never thought I’d wear light and dark denim in the same outfit, but I really like it! Never say never…

Splendid Eco 100% Recycled Pullover - I bought this on impulse during a flash sale and my goodness it quickly became one of my favorite tops. It’s the softest cotton and has a brushed-fleece feel on the inside. I love the cropped-length and that the sleeves aren’t too loose. It’s cut extremely well and I’m already considering a second color. Of note - matching joggers are available (they’re super comfy, but I like the pair below even more).

Madewell Sweatshirt(s) - Let’s “blame” quarantine for my sudden collection of Madewell sweatshirts. They just fit so well! I’ve been wearing a neon one for morning walks, a more-fitted polka-dot style for Friday afternoons, and this green one on weekends. Madewell has sales fairly often so it’s not too difficult to find one of these at a really great price.

Pants

I’ve been sticking to Madewell denim for a while. Their petite length is much better for me and the fit is almost-always perfect. Pending the style, I’m usually the same size in all of their denim. For non-stretch jeans, I’d recommend going up one size (even if they will loosen with wear).

Madewell Petite Perfect Vintage Jean - my new favorite that fits just as well as the boy jean, but just slightly more fitted. This style doesn’t have stretch, so go up one, but know that they will loosen up. Definitely tight at first, but it doesn’t last. I love the color of this denim and that they really go with everything (and all shoes).

Madewell Petite Slim High-rise Boy Jean - my usual pair for working at home because they’re not too tight and look nice with any type of top. This style does stretch out a lot, but I still go with my usual size. I could try one size down, but I like how they fit (even when a bit big).

Vuori Performance Jogger - these are most-certainly my most-worn comfy pants as of late and they are as soft as advertised. They are a good length, even for us short folks, and just fit very nicely. I’m wearing them for watching tv, but I’d definitely consider them for my morning walk as well.

Shoes

Golden Goose Hanami slip-on sneakers - I received these as a birthday gift and they quickly became my most-worn footwear. Barely any time needed for breaking in and they were immediately comfy for all-day walks and errands. There is a hidden “lift” in the heel so you’re wearing very-mini high-heels. But they’re sneakers!

Vince Blair Perforated slip-on sneakers - My tried-and-true go-to that I could wear year-round if it weren’t for snow. They truly go with everything and once broken in they can be the “walk everywhere” pair.

Superga Cotu Classic Sneaker - I wear these all summer long, but they’re even great into the fall. I’ve been wearing my grey sage pair with jeans and I’m set for the day. I’ve walked miles and miles in this style and have remained comfortable the whole time. It’s a classic shoe, at an excellent price point, that works with every outfit. And they always look chic. PS: (The Duchess) Kate Middleton wears them often. ;)

Jenni Kayne Mules and Clogs - I received my first pair as an anniversary gift and now I’m forever spoiled. They’re as comfy as promised and as chic as advertised. I wear mine mostly at home (so far), but I’m totally smitten. The clogs fit a bit wider than the mules and are instantly comfy. No break-in period required.

These shoes (this brand) are definitely a splurge purchase, but a first-time customer discount is available. I’ve also seen several style bloggers advertise a discount code fairly often, which is helpful!

And don’t forget to wear a mask. It’s like a smile - don’t leave home without it. ;)

Enjoy!
