Bar Bites: Greek and Mediterranean

For when the Mediterranean is calling our name but we can't hop a plane for the night...

Kava Neo-Taverna

Location: Boston,  MA

Eat:  Can I just say that this one of my favorite places for a summer escape in the city? We have been to this South End gem twice and each time we left I was starry-eyed and hoping to go back soon - maybe it was the wine? The wine was fantastic. A small restaurant with an airy feel that transports you to Greece (or how I imagine it to be) and embraces you with delicious food, great wine, and an atmosphere filled with blue and white that sweetly says, "relax. You're on vacation." A bustling space with a line out the door, the staff manages the no-reservation policy well and we've never had to wait too, too long. The waiters are cheerful and very helpful when it comes to ordering gluten free. Thankfully much of the menu is naturally GF so there's lots of options. Every single dish we ordered, and we order a lot, was fabulous. Our first visit was with close friends and we had a blast. And then we kicked off our first wedding anniversary weekend here with salads, lamb, octopus, shrimp, a lot of feta, and great wine. What could be better? A must-go-back, in my opinion.

Porto

Location:  Boston, MA

Eat: A wonderful Mediterranean-inspired menu and a bright and airy decor when you step inside, making me feel as if we're right near the Mediterranean, rather than near Back Bay. A recent brunch made me add this spot to my "must return" list as I cannot wait to try more of the delicious menu and fun cocktails (I tried one with tequila and cold brew coffee!). Many dishes can be adapted to be gluten free, and several are naturally GF already! The shakshuka was incredible and my husband's lamb burger looked perfect. A menu that has been changed and adapted over time, the current one sounds awesome to me and I can't wait to bring a group of friends in sometime for brunch or dinner. And I must admit, we got to meet the wonderful owner, Jody Adams, when we visited! What a surprise and treat!
